Carly's outdoor paintings serve as references to larger, more abstract, oil paintings on canvas. Using a transparent underpainting to express abstract shapes and color harmony not only allows a representation of the landscape, but expresses mood and atmosphere. Comments from viewers range from "ethereal and atmospheric" to "wild and exciting". Primarily self-taught, her major inspiration is the landscape itself, which she says, "became my instructor". Workshops with internationally known artists, Susan Sarback, Alan Flattmann, Terry Ludwig, Bob Rohm, and Elsie Dresch, opened her eyes to color and challenged her to paint consistently.
