About The Artist:
I am a self taught artist who grew up in Brooklyn, New York. I have spent over 20 years living near the beaches I love on both coasts of the beautiful state of Florida. My father was my first “art teacher”. I remember him teaching me how to draw faces by dividing an oval “egg” into a grid when I was about 5 years old.
Although I obtained a Masters’ degree in Counseling and spent years working in the field specializing in Grief work, I have always maintained and nurtured my creative side. Walking into an art supply store reminds me of entering the penny candy store with my nickel when I was a young girl. I can’t resist the variety of colors and materials. The endless possibilities inherent in each paint tube or pencil is just so much fun to play with.
The art I create is influenced by my affinity for NYC, the blue waters and white sand of the beach and my interest in psychology, especially our unconscious motivations and desires.
Beth currently lives in the Atlanta, GA area with her husband Paul, daughter Ariel, Tia, the Chihuahua princess, Mia, the feline princess and Willa, the cutest Pekingese you ever saw.
Change is often resisted but occurs whether we want it to or not. Human beings constantly evolve, adapt and transform physically, emotionally and spiritually. Our bodies’ framework undergoes change constantly. Our skin is continuously regenerating while our skeletal system is totally replaced every decade.
Wounds both physical and emotional are healed by our bodies creating new tissue called “scars.” Without continual destruction and reconstruction we could not survive.
These changes take place so quietly and mysteriously and with such subtlety we miss them if we don’t pay close attention. On a daily basis we don’t notice small variations. We only observe them clearly when we compare relationships, individuals or even countries over time.
In the same way nature/biology uses construction, destruction and repair I’ve used:
Layers, dissolves, washes, symbols, transparencies, collage, glazes,
line, representation of natural elements, depth and lights and darks
to both cover and reveal the beauty of the scars that cause the growth and transformation of humanity.
